The setting for this novel is 1870s London and the first glimpse we get of Sugar, our main character, is at the age of nineteen working in a brothel on Silver Street. She is not at the bottom of the social strata for there are some that are far worse off, yet Sugar yearns to escape to a better life. Her ascent through the strata of Victorian society offers us intimacy with a host of heartbreaking, lovable, disgusting, snobbish but most of all unforgettable characters. After researching his topic for over 20 years Faber has presented us with an intricate picture of life in London in the late nineteenth century. His writing style and this depth of detail pulls you into his novel from page one and truly does not let you go until some outside stimulus snaps you back into the 21st century.
