Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
You've probably never heard of the great Dan Patch,
but in the early part of the 20th century, he was the most famous horse
in America. His entire story hinged on an inexperienced horseman's purchase
of a perpetually lame mare named Zelica, and his subsequent (and possibly
drunken) decision to breed her with a temperamental pacer named Joe
Patchen. Dan Patch, the result of this pairing, broke all the speed
records for harness racing and captured the adoration of the country.
At a time when most Americans favored trotters, Dan was a pacer. Once,
he even paced away from a stable fire rather than breaking into a gallop.
His life is one of the most fascinating stories never told ... until
now. --Colt R.
