Classic Fairy Tales - Kepler's Staff Review

Often fairytales are pounded flat. Their essence remains, but familiarity has sucked the spice and tang out of them. Berlie Doherty's retellings resuscitate the originals without stumbling into dark or frightening territory. Some of the more gruesome details from the traditional versions have transformed into shadows that serve to shade and sculpt the fairy stories into tales that reflect reality while remaining firmly planted in imagination. Jane Ray's exotic and wonderfully stylized illustrations are a lovely match. Her vibrant characters seem to come from all over the world but nowhere in particular. Doherty's words and Ray's pictures will, like the best fairytales, help the reader to see their own world through a strange and fantastic lens. Take one look, and spellbound, you'll take this book home.
