Child 44 - Kepler's Staff Review

Imagine life in a country where noone is safe and a simple allegation is enough to ruin a man if not write his death sentence. Then go on to imagine that you, an officer of the state, are asked to denounce a loved one, maybe as a test, maybe as an act of revenge, maybe because your loved one said no to someone important. What would you do, knowing that your decision with affect the rest of your life, and the lives of all you love?

Then you must understand that if you live in a perfect society there should be no crime and especially no serial killers in the country. To admit there is such a crime is itself a crime against the state. So if you came across a series of murders of children in the same fashion, should you ignore it, blame it on a social deviant, or go in search of the killer, despite the risks?

A hard book to describe - part thriller, part romance, part search into a war hero true believer's crisis of faith in the state, part history of life under Stalin. This is a novel that gets under your skin, makes you feel the poverty, insecurity, and desperation of the times. Leo and Raisa are incredibly well drawn, changing completely as the book unfolds. It is brutal, intense, shocking, and all consuming. The twists in this book will make you gasp, leave you nervous, and simply unable to put it down. I can't recommend it highly enough. --Angela M.
