Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
Dame Margery Kempe wrote the first known autobiography in English about her pilgrimage to Rome. In it the pious Lady complains bitterly about Johanna, the young maidservant she forced to come along on the journey. But this is Johanna’s book and she gets her turn at telling her own story about the trip forced upon her. Moreover since pilgrimages were often undertaken in groups for protection, Johanna finds herself serving not only her mistress, but the other pilgrims! Despite the hardships of the trip, some of the other pious pilgrims turn out to be the most taxing and dangerous obstacles. When her irritating mistress is expelled from the group, Johanna is again forced to remain where she does not wish to be. When her life is threatened, however, Johanna finally takes matters into her own hands and runs! For once she’ll get the chance to shape her own path to deliverance. Beautifully written, full of excitement, adventure and intrigue you will find yourselves on the edge of your seats as you follow Johanna’s fight for survival. - Reviewed by Antonia |
