A Bitter Truth - Kepler's Staff Review

Bess Crawford has just returned to London for a rare Christmas leave from the War when she discovers a bruised and freezing young woman huddled in the doorway of her flat.  It is quickly apparent that the woman has nowhere to turn and Bess is soon able to learn that she fled from her home in a small village after her husband struck her during a terrible quarrel.  With her usual generosity, Bess agrees to see the woman safely back to her home.  But once they arrive in Sussex, Bess is immediately sensitive to the tense atmosphere among the family and holiday house guests.  Before Bess can even begin to understand what is going on, one of the other house guests is found dead.  The family is haunted by a tragic past, could that be the motive?  Or was it something more recent?    Bess’s compassionate nature once again draws her into a tangled and thorny mystery, but this time Bess finds she is a suspect herself.  --Ann D.
