Is there anything you want so badly you would sell your soul to have it? Beauty? Wealth? Invincibility? Artistry? The power to control time so events repeat until you can guarantee their outcome?
Comforting and unspeakably beautiful, Madam Vileroy offers five ten-year-olds just that. Three of them accept, a fourth does, but then changes his mind, and a fifth declines. But devil that she is, she takes all of them and raises them across the world in a haze of privilege, indoctrination, and fear.
Fifteen now, Victoria, Christian, twins Bicé and Belle, and Valentin resurface in New York City as the newly-admitted students of the exclusive Marlowe School. Upon this stage does their devilish governess wish to test their uncanny skills against the unsuspecting elite. It's just the first step towards her bigger and better plans for her adopted children.
But being the devil as she is, Vileroy cannot quite avoid the temptation to torture her own wards, or to enjoy pitting them against each other. Pain, jealousy, humiliation, and despair are just some of the voyeuristic diversions that feed her energy and desire.
Alas, her "children" may not all pass her tests. Some may even attempt to fail to save their souls. But what happens when you break a contract with the devil?
