Emily’s main motive for marriage was to escape her overbearing and socially conscious mother. So when her husband Phillip, the Viscount Ashton, died soon after their wedding she felt little grief for the loss of a man who she barely knew. It was almost two years later when Lady Emily stumbled onto Phillip’s diaries that she began to know her late husband as a complicated man who apparently loved his new wife deeply.
