Alice I Have Been - Kepler's Staff Review

In this delightful mix of fact and fiction, we meet eighty year old Alice Lidell Hargreaves, the true subject of Lewis Carroll’s Alice Through the Looking Glass. As she looks back over her life, we see a young girl and her siblings befriended by a stuttering math professor Charles Dodson (Lewis Carroll) who enjoyed photographing them and telling them stories. When he makes up a story about Alice, she begs him to write it. It is also the story of love and loss, largess and tragedy, and a long life lived.

But it is also the story of Charles Dodson, who was probably under the influence of opium when he wrote it. Was he a bit creepy because he loved to photograph the girls and tell them stories? Or was he a misfit in an academic world, who suffered from arrested development and fit in better with children than with other professors? You be the judge.

This book stayed with me for weeks in a haunting way.
