Alchemy and Meggy Swannalchemy - Kepler's Staff Review

By Karen Cushman

Meggy Swann has a very sharp tongue, biting wit, and her only friend is a goose. Meggy and her goose are unceremoniously dumped in Elizabethan London to live with a stranger who practices alchemy, the mysterious art of turning base metal to gold. The alchemist is her father and he doesn't want her. London is dirty, unfriendly, and lonely. Her walking sticks and wabbling gait are just as unwelcome and suspicious here as they were back in the country. While her father struggles to transform the mundane into gold Meggy struggles to find friends, kindness and warmth in her own heart, and her place in a strange and wild world. Cushman has spun a golden tale that will please fans of her previous novels and lovers of historical fiction alike. Meggy is proud and stubborn but loveably prickly and wonderfully clever. "Ye toads and vipers!" Begone, and take this book. Read it. Then thank me.
